The University of New Mexico (UNM) has created a new policy pertaining to transgender “inclusion and equality” which lists “persistent refusal to respect a preferred or affirmed name or pronoun can constitute discrimination or harassment.”
The policy comes after a series of controversial events at the campus, including severe protests which have resulted in riot police arriving on scene to deescalate the situation. Protesters and students on campus were outraged by Charlie Kirk’s appearance just two nights ago, slamming pots and pans into the windows of the building.
In September, students protested Tomi Lahren’s visit to the Turning Point USA (TPUSA) chapter on campus, acting in such a violent manner, TPUSA students were forced to barricade the doors to the room the event was being held in.
Just weeks after the event with Lahren was disrupted by the outrage mob, students on campus hosted conservative speaker Ian Haworth, who faced similar opposition, with minimal campus law enforcement intervention. After Haworth’s visit, a local affordable student housing organization called for the expulsion of TPUSA chapter members, Students for Life chapter leaders, and the termination of the groups’ faculty advisor. The organization is looking into filing a Title IX violation lawsuit against the students and the advisor for “hosting hate speech on campus and perpetrating violence against women,” according to TPUSA student members at UNM.
UNM has a long history of being incredibly hostile towards conservative guests and their own students, now, they will be subject to the radical transgender policies that violate the freedom of speech and religion on campus.
In addition to requiring students to respect ever-changing pronouns and “preferred names,” all students and faculty will also be able to use the restroom or facility that best correlates with their gender identity.
The university will also issue students a free student ID with their preferred name and pronouns if the one they possess does not meet their criteria. The school will not require legal documentation to make this change, and seemingly will allow students to have an ID that does not match their legal given name, which could be considered a serious security risk.
University of New Mexico’s increasingly radical policies is ostracizing their conservative students, forcing them to be the center of mob outrage and refusing to take any action to protect their safety on campus. The group of people actually targeted by hatred and violence is the same group that will not receive any special policies outlining “harassment” — conservative students.
