The University of California faculty has now joined in on calls to defund the campus police alongside the movement “UC Cops Off-Campus,” demanding the removal of campus police officers from all UC campuses by September 1, 2021.
Nine campuses joined together to stage a series of protests, with some being virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Simultaneously, professors from across the UC system gave local media interviews about their desire to abolish the campus police system.
Director of the Public Policy Center at UCLA Isaac Bryan says, “It’s about removing law enforcement as we know it. UCLA would have to think of alternative ways to provide people support.”
I’m not sure what “alternative ways” Bryan and his colleagues suggest to provide adequate protection and safety to students, but this certainly doesn’t sound like a way to advocate for well being in the UC system.
What are your thoughts on continued calls to defund police departments on and off-campus? ????
