On November 11th, we honor the brave men and women who have served our great nation. This has great significance for patriotic and grateful Americans, but it can be difficult to articulate the importance of this day to young children. A great way to help kids understand Veterans Day is to have them interview a veteran.

I did this activity with my 8-year-old son, Royce. First, we talked about the significance of Veterans Day in an age-appropriate way, and then I had my son come up with some important questions to ask his 91-year-old grandfather, who was in the Coast Guard.

This was such a positive experience because we used critical thinking with a practical implication to understand patriotism. Education starts in the home among those with like-minded values. So, brothers, teach your little sisters. Cousins, educate those younger than you. And parents, be active participants in your child’s education.
