The Woke Generational Divide
The polling among leftists has become more and more fascinating. President Biden’s approval rating currently sits somewhere in the mid-30s. While it’s hard to imagine how or why it’s even that high, the demo that seems to be the least critical is the middle-aged folks. This poses an interesting problem for the left.
The current lefty policy is not received well by the young OR the old, and the problem that the left has is that both the demographics are both unhappy but for very different reasons.
I’m only guessing here, but from anecdotal conversations with friends and family in both demographics, the younger leftist crowd doesn’t like the leftist older crowd and vice-versa. The older crowd is more comprised of union lefties who became lefties when it was the party of organized labor and supposedly was looking out for the middle-class worker. The older crowd hates the younger crowd because of how woke and off the rails they’ve gotten.
The younger crowd, however, can’t stand how old-school the older lefties are: The new generation hates the idea that the old left can’t understand the new gender pronouns and think that the current administration hasn’t gone nearly far enough when it comes to expanding woke ideas. Although the woke ideas are bad for society, the younger lefties are desperate to get the older lefties on board.
Consolidation of the sides is the most difficult thing to do. The left is currently going through an identity crisis that could end up costing them dearly if they can’t figure out how to merge the two sides of their own side. That’s not to say that the right doesn’t have similar issues but it seems like the factions on the right are more closely linked than the faction on the left.
Only time will tell, but my money isn’t going to be riding on the older lefties getting on board the woke train.
