The United Nations has been a joke for decades. But since Russia decided to invade Ukraine, it’s been more prevalent than ever.
Back up: “I thought the UN was diplomatic and measured,” one might say.
Wrong.
I’m not going to go into a full history of the UN, but know this; slowly but surely, the countries that made up the UN started to realize that they could lean on the United States to pony up when it came to ‘paying the bills.’ In other words, the United States is the only reason the UN exists. Yet, for some reason, all the UN members are viewed equally within the confines of the UN body itself.
Basically, the United States has just about the same say as Botswana when it comes to UN resolutions (also keep that in mind too… the UN doesn’t actually have any power. They just vote on resolutions that carry no weight whatsoever). And for some reason, we take this hoity-toity meaningless debate society seriously.
So hopefully, you’re picking up what I’m putting down. The UN is dumb.
BUT NEVER has the UN shown how truly dumb it is then when considering resolutions to condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
The UN Security Council is charged with ensuring international peace and security. And in the never-ending quest for fairness, the UN rotates which countries chair the various committees and councils within the UN.
Guess who currently chairs the UN Security Council?
The freaking Russians.
So when it came time to vote on a draft resolution that would have condemned Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, despite having 11 of the 15 Security Council votes, they VETOED the resolution. They were able to do so because, FOR SOME REASON, we, the developed world, let the Russians control the Securities Council in the name of fairness.
The UN is a joke.
