House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently took a trip to Taiwan amidst growing tension between the country and its rival, China. Most America’s don’t know the details of the trip, they only know she visited Taiwan after China warned her not to visit the country.
While there, Nancy Pelosi showed her support for Taiwan and stated that Taiwan is an independent nation. This is obviously correct, and is probably the only thing I have ever agreed with the speaker on.
While she has said this, though, former Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby stated in a White House briefing that “we do not recognize Taiwan as an independent nation.” In fact, he said this statement at least three times now.
So which is it? While the Speaker of the House is saying one thing, the White House is saying another.
Right now America is speaking with two different voices. This is never a good sign, ESPECIALLY regarding foreign policy. The relationship between China and Taiwan is a very delicate situation. China is showing more aggressiveness in recent days, and it is not unlikely that we eventually see a full-scale invasion of Taiwan.
This conflicting rhetoric from our Government is not a good look for us, and it is dangerous.
