Governor Greg Abbott of Texas sent a letter to the Texas Rangers declining the invitation to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on April 5th during their home opener against the Toronto Blue Jays at Globe Life Field.

This decision came after Major League Baseball decided to move the All-Star Game from Atlanta to Denver in response to Georgia’s new election integrity laws. Governor Abbott cited MLB’s decision to perpetuate false political narratives. He also made clear that he will not participate in any future MLB events and that the state of Texas won’t seek to host the All-Star game or any other special events held by the MLB.

“Major League Baseball adopted what has turned out to be a false narrative about the election law reforms in Georgia, and, based on that false narrative, moved the MLB All-Star game from Atlanta,” reads the letter. “It is shameful that America’s pastime is not only being influenced by partisan political politics, but also perpetuating false political narratives. This decision does not diminish the deep respect I have for the Texas Rangers baseball organization, which is outstanding from top to bottom.”

Governor Abbott has not only opened up his state so the Rangers could have the first compacity crowd since pre-pandemic but he is taking a stance against the divisiveness that is desperately weaving its way into our beloved game.
