For the 10th anniversary of the musical Hamilton, creator Lin-Manuel Miranda will be donating proceeds to non-profit immigration services amid the efforts of the Trump Administration to clamp down on illegal immigration.
Miranda and the Hispanic Federation formed the “Immigrants: We Get the Job Done Coalition.” This is an organization through which the play’s proceeds will be funneled to fund various immigration services. According to The Associated Press, an August 3rd performance of “Hamilton” in New York City is predicted to raise $3 million for the coalition.
Miranda told The Associated Press why he views immigration as an important “export” and “narrative” that is essential to the US.
“One of America’s greatest exports–at least for me growing up–was the immigration narrative,” he said. “So many people I know… came to this country from somewhere else seeking a better life and then helped make this country better by being here. And I believe that’s one of the greatest promises, one of greatest things about the American experiment, and I’ll continue to fight for that and support organizations that are helping that cause.”
Miranda further claimed the issue of immigration is larger than it may seem, with many Americans not being distant from a first generation of immigrants. Immigration is “the same reason why [the] No Kings protest vastly outnumbered the military parade happening on the same day,” he stated.
The Hispanic Federation’s website states, “We Get the Job Done Coalition is a multi-ethnic, multi-racial coalition of leading national immigrant service providers.” Funds will be directed toward advocacy, social, educational, and legal services. Some of these areas of advocacy include “immigrant survivors of gender-based violence, asylees, Dreamers, day laborers, LGBTQ+ immigrants.”
The coalition consists of 12 partner organizations, including various race-based civil rights and labor groups such as the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Service, Alianza Americas, Asian Law Caucus, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, and Haitian Bridge Alliance.
