Target Is Promoting Woke Christianity
Critical race theory and extreme leftism are not compatible with biblical teaching. Period. The idea that society should be somehow structured around our differences as human beings and encourage preferential treatment for one group versus another is completely opposite to God’s teaching that we are all made in His image–equal, despite the differences between us.
Target recently found themselves in hot water after it was revealed they were selling a devotional daily prayer book, “A Rhythm of Prayer” by Sarah Bessey, which included a passage, “Prayer of a Weary Black Woman” written by Chanequa Walker-Barnes, Ph.D.
The passage begins, “Dear God, Please help me to hate White people. Or at least want to hate them.” She continues the passage by stating she is “not talking about the White anti-racist allies who have taken up this struggle against racism with their whole lives,” but instead, the “nice” White people, including those “who are happy to have [her] over for dinner but alert the cops every time an unrecognized person of color passes by their houses,” and includes those “who claim the progressive label but are really wolves in sheep’s clothing.”
The description of the book on Target’s website describes the book as “a trusted space where people seek help, hope, and peace, energized by God and one another.”
Okay… call me crazy, but HOW ON EARTH is praying to blindly hate an entire race of people going to lead Christians to “hope” and “peace?!” The rhetoric in this passage is dangerously divisive, and seeks to pit God’s people against one another in blind hatred for the color of our skin–literally, racism.
This is the result of what I often refer to as “woke Christianity,” the consequence of church leaders failing to speak up for Biblical truth and objective reality in a time that has rejected the very idea of truth. Today, the Christian church in America is much more often practicing the religion of Leftism, rather than the teachings of Jesus Christ.
This has become increasingly evident as Biblical teaching is thrown out the window to make way for Leftist talking points and blatant hatred for conservatives in the church.
Recently, a pastor referred to notable conservative, Candace Owens as a slave to the KKK:
A “Christian” church in Nashville shared this post on social media, verbatim claiming the Bible is NOT the Word of God:
Back to the devotional daily prayer book… The worst part about this is, the progressive “Christian” author of the book doubled down after receiving criticism for her anti-Biblical rhetoric with a statement on her website…
Here’s how she responded:
“Dr. Walker-Barnes’ prayer is faithful, honest lament, modeled on Scripture. It is a gift of intimacy and vulnerability to the Church and we are grateful to her, not only the prayer, but for her work and her witness in the world.”
She continues, “The backlash that Dr. Walker-Barnes is facing because of her prayer ironically serves as proof of why such a prophetic, powerful, and potent prayer is necessary.”
This devotional is right in line with the trajectory of the modern church and is a direct consequence of embracing woke political ideology rather than Biblical truth. You can read the entire “Prayer of a Weary Black Woman” passage here 👇
