The Supreme Court of the United States announced the date recently to hear Mississippi’s controversial abortion case, which serves as a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade, for December 1, 2021.
Mississippi had previously banned all abortion in the state starting at 15 weeks, prior to the once determined “age of viability” set by Roe decades ago in 1973.
Legal briefs have flooded the court since the case was granted a writ of certiorari, including an amicus brief from Planned Parenthood discussing what they believed to be “the grave consequences of banning abortion before viability.” President Biden’s Administration has echoed the sentiment shared by Planned Parenthood, encouraging the court to uphold Roe v. Wade.
Next summer, a ruling on the case is expected to be reached, and Americans everywhere are sure to be following the case closely! This is one of the first times Roe has been directly challenged in the judicial system, particularly by the Supreme Court, and could lead to millions of lives saved and proper protection of the right to life.
