A recent IBM study has found that a significant percentage of the workforce must be “reskilled” as AI technology unfolds.

The effectiveness of Generative AI technology like ChatGPT, including the ability to write and code, has left many business executives believing that the workforce will be forced to undergo significant changes. According to the IBM study involving thousands of C-level executives from various countries, an estimated 40% of employees will need to be “reskilled” within the next three years. This accounts for more than one billion workers worldwide.

Interestingly, the study also highlights a shifting focus on job requirements. While technical and STEM skills were once paramount, the ability to effectively communicate and exhibit people skills is now increasingly valued by employers.

However, there is an optimistic side to this trend. The surveyed executives overwhelmingly agreed that AI technology will enhance roles rather than replace them altogether.

“AI won’t replace people—but people who use AI will replace people who don’t,” the IBM study stated.

The rapid integration of AI into workplaces has prompted educational institutions to respond by equipping individuals with the skills to harness this technology to their advantage. Notably, Arizona State University (ASU) has taken the step to allow applicants to use artificial intelligence in their law school application materials. ASU’s College of Law has also introduced several courses incorporating AI into the legal field.

As AI continues to drive transformative changes across industries, white-collar jobs are poised to undergo significant shifts in the coming decade. While concerns about this technology are valid, individuals should find ways to use this technology to their benefit on a personal level.
