This is a name you’re not hearing anywhere else – Tyler Bertuzzi. He’s a Red Wings winger who started the season as just one of four unvaccinated players in the NHL. Now, he is set to become the ONLY unvaccinated player in the league.

Bertuzzi, a Canadian native, is not allowed to travel or play in his team’s games in Canada. He’s slated to lose around half a million dollars or more due to missed games and other factors associated with COVID protocols.

The best part, he’s not letting this affect his game. Bertuzzi became the third Red Wings skater in 25 years with 9+ points through their first five games of a season scoring 6 goals and 3 assists.

Also important to note, his team has his back. Red Wings Captain Dylan Larkin said Bertuzzi is well-liked and respected in the locker room. Coach Blashill said he’s a great teammate and General Manager Yzerman said “it’s his decision” and “he’s in no position to force anyone.”

While you probably won’t see “Stand With Bertuzzi” protests outside Little Caesars Arena in Detroit like the protests we’ve seen for Kyrie Irving in New York, Bertuzzi deserves the same amount of attention and coverage. What he is doing is courageous and commendable. Hold the line, Bertuzzi.
