Hunting dates back to prehistoric times, so it should come as no surprise that some of the most prominent figures in history participated in hunting, the Queen of England being one of them back in the Elizabethan era.
Queen Elizabeth loved to hunt when she wasn’t busy with her royal duties. She and her courtiers would ride out on horseback hunting deer and stags. When the animals would get caught, she would then be invited to cut the animal’s throat, a common practice used in hunting back in her time. The French Ambassador reported that The Queen harvested six does with her crossbow in 1575.
Hawking was another activity The Queen liked to do. Hawking is the hunting method used with trained hawks flying around to find prey; once found, the hawk dives down for the kill.
Along with being fond of hunting, the Queen also loved her pets. She had many favorite horses that were well taken care of and small dogs that would accompany her everywhere she went.
