When choosing a Supreme Court Justice Nominee, President Biden stated that he was looking for two characteristics: female and a person of color.

This all sounds too odd. If I remember correctly, isn’t judging someone by the color of their skin racist? President Biden’s logic behind choosing a Supreme Court Justice is simply backwards. When I fly on a plane, I want a pilot who knows how to operate the machinery. I don’t care about the amount of melanin they have. Moreover, when I consider who would be an ideal fit for a Supreme Court nominee, I don’t immediately think of someone’s racial and gender identity. Rather, I think of one’s professional experience and intellectual capabilities.

Let’s flip the script. Imagine it was President Trump, and he declared that he would search for a nominee who is both male and white. It would be lunacy. Leftists remain vocal on issues such as racism yet are the first to publicly practice it. What makes this hypocrisy okay?

President Biden’s actions when choosing a Supreme Court nominee serve as a reflection of the current state of our country. We do not have our priorities in check. When meeting someone, many of us are quick to devote attention to their external rather than internal qualities.

Unlike our president, I am a firm believer that we can learn more from talking to those instead of looking at those around us. For this country to become more unified, we need to kindle relationships without considering the factors that compose one’s identity.
