President Biden Expected to Sign Executive Order that Increases Gun Control

President Joe Biden is reportedly expected to sign an executive order aimed at enhancing gun control on Thursday, with a focus on targeting gun conversion devices, 3D printed firearms, and creating a task force to address emerging firearms threats, according to Fox News.

The order will be part of The White House’s efforts to clamp down on conversion devices, which can turn semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic weapons. However, such devices are already illegal under federal law. The order will also target 3D-printed firearms, which are built using online files. Although it is legal to build personal firearms, these weapons often lack serial numbers, making them harder for law enforcement to trace when recovered at crime scenes.

Additionally, the executive order will establish an emerging firearms threats task force, composed of leaders of multiple federal agencies. This task force will be responsible for issuing a report that assesses the dangers posed by conversion devices and 3D-printed guns.

Another key aspect of the order will be the increase in active shooter drills. The order will direct the Secretaries of Education, Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, the Attorney General, and the US Surgeon General to develop enhanced drills to better prepare students for active shooter scenarios in schools, per Fox News. This move follows a recent mass shooting in Alabama, where a shooter, believed to have used a conversion device, killed four people and wounded 17 others.

In the past, President Biden signed gun control legislation in 2022 that included enhanced background checks for gun buyers between the ages of 18 and 21 and added a more rigorous definition of a federally licensed firearm dealer.
