An exclusive set of online polls conducted by Turning Point USA found widespread concern among Americans about big government, patriotism, and the state of free speech in the country.
The polls were conducted to gauge American attitudes toward freedom and national identity. One poll, which asked if Americans believe free speech is currently under attack in the country, found that the majority of people agree. Of 1,978 respondents who were asked about this sentiment, an overwhelming 83.9% agreed. Similarly, 5,657 respondents were asked if “big government” is a threat to freedom. Of those respondents, 94.3% agreed.
Likely due to the overwhelming belief of rights being eroded in the country, views on American exceptionalism were more divided. When asked if America is the greatest country in the world, the majority (60%) of respondents said no.
The results suggest a majority of Americans are deeply concerned about government overreach and restrictions on speech, which may explain why a significant portion no longer view the United States as the greatest country in the world. These results come as there have been numerous examples of government overreach in recent years.
The current administration has been working to roll back examples of government overreach, such as dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the federal government. The administration has also taken steps to defend free speech on college campuses, with President Donald Trump signing an executive order on his first day in office aimed at ensuring the government does not engage in conduct that would violate the free speech of Americans.
