NYC Mayor Wants Illegal Immigrants Charged With Crimes Deported From City
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is seemingly having a change of heart as he announced he’s open to deporting migrants who have been charged with crimes, according to the New York Post.
Adams’ previous position was that law enforcement should wait for the conviction of an illegal immigrant before shipping them out of the city. The change in position comes as Adams plans to meet with the new “border czar” Tom Homan.
“My position is people who commit crimes in our city, you have abdicated your right to be in our city and I am open to figure out the best way to address that,” he said.
“You’ve got a guy, he’s on camera shooting at a police officer. I don’t want that guy in my city, plain and simple,” Adams said. The Mayor was referring to 19-year-old illegal immigrant Bernardo Castro Mata who entered from Venezuela before allegedly shooting two NYPD officers.
“Those who are here committing crimes, robberies, shooting at police officers, raping innocent people, have been a harm to our country,” Adams said as he urged progressives to “cancel” him for wanting to protect the city.
Adams said he plans to work with the incoming administration’s immigration goals instead of opposing them. The stance is a notable deviation from left-wing cities like Los Angeles, which recently became a “sanctuary city” and will not work with federal immigration enforcement.
“I want to make clear I’m not going to warring with this administration, I’m going to be working with this administration,” Adams continued. “I’d like to speak with our border czar and find out what his plans are. Where our common grounds are, we can work together.”
New York has been hit hard by the migrant crisis as police estimate as many as 75% of arrests taking place in Midtown Manhattan are illegal immigrants. These migrants are arrested for assault, robbery, and domestic violence, yet remain in the city.
