New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently called for a modification of the city’s sanctuary city law amid a surge in illegal migrants who have overwhelmed the city.

During a Town Hall Meeting on Monday, Mayor Adams stated that New York City should modify its sanctuary city law for migrants who commit felonies to be turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and subsequently deported.

“We should not be allowing people who are repeatedly committing crimes to remain here and we cannot collaborate with ICE in the process,” Adams stated in the meeting. “Those who are committing crimes, we need to modify the sanctuary city law. If you commit a felony, a violent act, we should be able to turn you over to ICE and have you deported.”

This call to action comes after a disturbing incident that garnered national attention, where a group of illegal migrants violently assaulted two New York City police officers, only to be released from custody without bail. Following the release of these migrants, one of the perpetrators was seen flipping off reporters and smirking.

“I want to go back to the standards of the previous mayors who, I believe, subscribed to my belief that people who are suspected of committing serious crimes in this city should be held accountable,” Adams further stated.

The shift in Mayor Adams’ stance on sanctuary city policies marks a significant departure from the previous rhetoric embraced by many mayors of large liberal cities across the United States. In the past, cities have adopted sanctuary status as a way to promise illegal migrants safety from deportation and appear more compassionate.

In 2021, Eric Adams posted on Twitter (now X), “We should protect our immigrants. Period. Yes, New York City will remain a sanctuary city under an Adams administration.”

However, it has become increasingly clear Mayor Adams’ change in rhetoric comes after the conclusion that public sentiment is turning against such policies.

Recent polls, including one conducted by Harvard-Harris and another by Gallup, have highlighted immigration as the top political concern for a significant portion of Americans. The recent Harvard-Harris poll found 35% of respondents listing immigration as their main political concern, making it by far the top issue among voters.

As the American public continues to see illegal immigrants overwhelm cities by draining resources and committing violent crime, politicians like Mayor Adams will be rightfully forced to backtrack on their past rhetoric and finally stand up to protect their constituents.
