A TPUSA chapter was established in the Houston, Texas area, marking the first time in which a chapter unaffiliated with a school has been started in the region (for instance, a University of Houston chapter exists).
According to Messenger News, the chapter is called “Turning Point USA — Houston County Chapter,” which seeks to build “the next generation of conservative leaders who stand for truth and liberty.”
Messenger News further reports that the chapter came about through the “discussions of several families” in the area, who found among them sufficient leadership to head the chapter.
“I’ve got to give it to my mom’s best friend, Mary Diefenbach,” chapter president Kendall Hickson said of its origins. “She kind of started it. I didn’t really know there was a Turning Point chapter system, but once I learned more about it, I got super interested. Next thing you know, we sent in our papers, and here we are.”
Of note, 44 people attended the first meeting in late November, a number which was unanticipated by the chapter who expected no more than ten.
Hickson and her fellow chapter leaders hope to get more Houstonians aware of the political issues and events affecting their lives.
“It’s trying to get more of the youth in Houston County aware of their government and all of the upcoming things that I feel like a lot of people don’t know about anymore,” Hickson said. “It’s kind of like, ‘This is behind the scenes. This is what’s really happening.’”
The Houston County TPUSA chapter welcomes people of all ages to participate in meetings. For those looking to get involved, the chapter’s facebook page contains more information.
