A Native American group is petitioning to restore the Washington NFL team’s original name, the Washington “Redskins,” and they already have more than 100,000 supporters.
Back in 2020, the NFL team known as the Washington Redskins underwent a name change in an attempt to appease the woke mob who declared the original name was harmful to Native American culture. Two years after being renamed to the “Commanders,” a Native American group is petitioning to change the NFL team’s name back to the “Redskins.”
The group, the Native American Guardian’s Association (NAGA), which describes itself as an organization opposed to “cancel culture against the Native American population,” has sent a letter to the owners of the Washington Commanders, requesting that the team’s name be changed back to the “Redskins.”
“All Americans should not only be able to sign this pledge, but they should be eager to stand up for the dignity of EVERY AMERICAN that is under assault in today’s increasingly nonsensical culture wars,” the letter states.
“This is a ‘LINE IN THE SAND’ pledge that reinforces the undeniable history of the NATIVE AMERICAN assisting the founding of the United States with Native American principles used by Founding Fathers in the United States Constitution,” it continues.
The letter continues to emphasize the importance of preserving Native American culture and describes the history of the football team’s “mutually beneficial relationship with the American Indian Community.”
NAGA asserts that restoring the team’s original name would be a revitalization of their “relationship with the American Indian community,” according to the letter.
In 2020, former team owner, Dan Snyder changed the organization’s name after years of public pressure from those who deemed the “Redskins” name a “slur” and derogatory to Native American communities.
After bowing to the pressure, Snyder changed the name of the Washington Redskins to the “Washington Football Team” for the 2020 to 2021 season. It wasn’t until 2022 that the name was officially changed to the Commanders.
The letter has been addressed to the leadership group of the Commanders, including the current owners of the team, as well as head coach Ron Rivera.
