Students at the TPUSA chapter at Mt. San Antonio College contacted us with a story about Leftists violently attacking their TPUSA table on campus on MULTIPLE occasions.
They described that a couple of weeks ago, campus police were called because someone reported the TPUSA members to have “a threatening voice on campus.” The chapter had been successful in recruiting upwards of 40 people throughout the day while tabling. The university PD showed up, but found the chapter was not doing anything wrong as they were located in the “free speech zone.”
On September 13th, campus PD showed up again because they apparently needed to sign a form in order to set up a recruitment table. The students obliged and signed the form. The chapter members stated that “as we were returning to the table with campus PD, a Leftist approached the table and immediately started ripping up all our rally signs and stealing many of the buttons and stickers from the table. He walked off with the cop trailing him and eventually pushed [the officer] and kicked him. He was arrested for assaulting a police officer and is currently being processed.”
This sort of harassment has happened multiple times before.
In a group statement, the students reported that “every time we have tables on campus, we have received numerous complaints to campus PD, and this time our materials were actually destroyed.”
TPUSA chapter member, Andrew Rivas, told us that one day he was tabling on campus and a student came up to him and stole his signs. A potential TPUSA member witnessing the interaction chased the thief down to get the materials back. He was successful in obtaining some of the stolen items, but the aggressor returned and ripped up more of the student’s materials.
Rivas told us that at that moment, “what was going through my head was that free speech isn’t a thing anymore. I will be attacked for promoting something that is good about America.”
Another incident occurred while TPUSA chapter member, Tyler Sebestian, was tabling on campus. He said, “On August 30th, we were outside the library tabling and talking to students who wanted to talk to us. This lady, I don’t think she was a student, walked by our table and was saying stuff under her breath so we couldn’t hear her. One of the students that overheard her let us know what she was saying. She was trash talking us and saying it’s illegal to be there. About 10 minutes later the campus police showed up. They were asking us about what we were doing and asked if we were asking for money [which] we weren’t because we are a nonprofit organization. [The police] were totally fine with us being there. After that there was no issue, a lot of students were very receptive to us being there.”
Sebestian continued, “I felt like we couldn’t even use our right to free speech on a public campus which makes me so sad. I wish in the future people would be more receptive to free speech and our amendment rights.”
For the side that always preaches against fascism, it sure seems to me that the real fascists are always on the Left.
This level of intolerance is sadly something we see daily both on campus and around the country. TPUSA chapters nationwide experience irrational and sometimes violent people constantly. To preserve civil discourse, people need to let differing opinions be heard peacefully.
