Mississippi is being sued by an atheist group over the state’s license plate that says, “In God We Trust.”

According to US News, Mississippi is tied for #1 as the most religious state in the US, with 83% of adults classifying as Christian.

Governor Tate Reeves of Mississippi said in a 2019 campaign, “Mississippi has a brand new license plate but the out-of-state liberals hate it, it’s because of these four words: ‘In God We Trust.’”

The atheist group claims they are being forced to “act as a billboard” for this religious message. Although the citizens of Mississippi can buy a custom plate or pay a penalty, these groups still believe it is unfair.

After the lawsuit was announced, Governor Reeves tweeted the campaign video with a caption stating “I know Mississippi’s values are our strength…and I meant it when I said as Governor I would defend our values every single day!” Governor also said, “I will defend “In God We Trust” on our tag, on our flag, and on our state seal….Every. Single. Day.”
