On Easter Sunday, Justin Bieber dropped a gospel album that included a song called “Afraid To Say,” which is all about cancel culture.
He sings:
I’m afraid to say the wrong thing
Criticized from every angle
What have we done with society?
When everybody’s getting canceled
And can’t there be room for maturity?
‘Cause writing ’em off is not the answer.
Then the second verse says:
We can’t write people off
God never writes us off
Even in our darkest days, even when we least deserve it
Even when we’re doing that stupid thing we wish we weren’t doing
God never writes us off, ever
He’s with us in our pain, He’s with us in our struggle
He’s with us in our bad decisions
He’s with us all the time, He never writes us off
Everything Justin sings here is correct. Nothing about cancel culture is biblically sound and it is NOT of God. It’s important for Justin to be pointing people to God while calling out cancel culture and things that do nothing but divide us. People are continuing to put their hope and trust in government, social media likes, and retweets rather than a solid foundation like The Bible and exposing sin in others is a great way to ignore your own. This is a song that could positively impact millions, like Kanye’s gospel album. While we shouldn’t expect celebs to be experts in theology, I think it is odd that while he got so much of this song right, he and his wife continue to promote leftist/woke politicians and movements in direct opposition to everything he sings about here.
You can’t be a Christian and support those who support cancel culture because, like Justin says, God doesn’t believe in cancelling. He believes in repentance for our sins and forgiveness. If Justin doesn’t want to come across as a hypocrite, he needs to get that straight.
