Confidence in the American Republic was Dr. Ben Carson’s theme for AmFest 2024. The former United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development opened his speech by acknowledging the results of the 2024 presidential election, which he said showed that Americans had grown weary of skyrocketing crime, illegal immigration, and the elite class warfare led by the current administration.

During his travels through Europe, Dr. Carson said he asked several people, “What do you think about America these days?” most responded with, “We think you’ve lost your minds!” Dr. Carson remarked that if Europeans think this about the United States, then we are definitely heading in the wrong direction. Dr. Carson said he believes some failures are really a setup for success, and America’s course is now being corrected.

Comparing the President Trump’s 2020 election loss and the subsequent 2024 victory, Dr. Carson recapped his medical mission to South Africa where he performed a risky emergency surgery on symbiotic conjoined twins. He said the operating room lacked the modern equipment to meet the necessary standards and his team depended on donations from people all over the world. Sadly, both infants died and Dr. Carson felt he’d failed the mission. 

When he got another opportunity to perform a type 2 craniopagus surgery under similar circumstances, Dr. Carson said he prayed, “Lord, it’s up to you.” Ironically, he said the Hallelujah Chorus started playing over the stereo system in the surgery room as he made the final cut that separated the twins. 

Dr. Carson emphasized that the last four years also allowed Americans to see how valuable conservative values are.

“That was a tremendous blessing and God’s way to help us see who we were as a nation. This is an amazing nation that we live in. It doesn’t matter where your ancestors came from…you’re better off in this country than you would be in that place.”
