Illegal Immigrants Could Make $15K Yearly Under New NYC Program

New York City migrant families could make up to $15,000 annually under a new controversial prepaid credit card program laid out by Mayor Eric Adams.
The city finalized a multi-million dollar contract with the New Jersey bank Mobility Capital Finance to dole out taxpayer funds to asylum seekers. The $53 million program is to provide illegal immigrants with prepaid credit cards to purchase groceries, according to the New York Post.
New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development inked the $53 million deal to cover fees and other expenses for the bank to dish out prepaid credit cards to migrants for the one-year pilot program.
The program received intense backlash over the use of taxpayer dollars and seemingly no regard for using such funds to take care of American citizens. At the time of this report, the city has no plan to check IDs for migrants, no restrictions on the program, and no fraud control in place.
The New York Post obtained a chart from city officials on the official breakdown of how much each illegal immigrant could receive under the program. The chart ranges from $345 per month for a single migrant to $2,203 per month for a migrant family of eight. A family of four would net approximately $1,195 under this proposed system.
Pregnant asylum seekers can reportedly receive an additional $36 per month on the pre-paid cards.
Officials told The Post that there is no set start date for the program rollout. The city intends to roll out the program to 500 illegal immigrant families but may expand that number to 65,000 if the program proves successful.
City Hall spokeswoman Kayla Mamalek said the program is “expected to save the city millions of dollars.” City officials claim the program would spend less on food services being used at migrant shelters and allow migrants to cook and eat what they want. The city claims it will save $7.2 million through this venture.
