Gen Z Girls on TikTok Take a Break from Crying Videos to Prepare for the Draft

No, Women Aren’t Actually Getting Drafted.

A now-viral video on TikTok has scared young women into believing that they might be required to register for the military draft in the coming years after learning each military branch has failed to meet its expected enlistment numbers over the past several years and foreign conflict is on the rise.

The video, posted by the account Inversenews, states that not only has it been recommended several times in Congress that women should be required to register for the Selective Service just as their male counterparts are, but that with the possibility of conflict on the horizon, it seems that America may need to re-evaluate its current policy regarding the draft.

As expected, young women on TikTok responded to these startling realizations about our military’s recent shortcomings with a great sense of humility and sincerity.

Making light of the viral video seems like the best option for most young women, as the Military Times reports, “Though recruitment and retention numbers may be down, there is no such plan to force American citizens into military service, nor is there a specific plan to draft women.”

While it remains incredibly unlikely that women will be required to register for the draft in the future, the comical videos do highlight an important characteristic of Gen Z which does pose a threat to American security.

For a bit of background on the matter — the U.S. currently requires all males to register for the draft 30 days after turning 18, failure to do so could result in fines, jail time, rejection of federal employment, or a denial of federal student loans. Adult males are eligible for conscription until the age of 26. Though registration remains active, the draft has not been used since 1973, nearing the end of the Vietnam War. Many people have posed staunch opposition to allowing women to join the draft, citing most frequently the Army’s embarrassing gender-neutral Combat Fitness Test results, which saw a 44% female failure rate for already-athletic women who volunteered for service.

Since 2020, recruitment numbers have been on the decline, and after 8,000 troops were discharged due to their stance on the COVID-19 vaccine, just 43 chose to return after the vaccine was removed as a service requirement. In addition to the unpopular mandates, the U.S. military has embraced a soft and feminine approach to recruitment advertisements, while the Department of Defense promotes “inclusivity” and “diversity” as “strategic imperatives.”

Much to the Pentagon’s surprise, these recruitment tactics have failed spectacularly. Our current military force has also reported an uptick in obese, overweight, and unfit “skinny-fat” recruits who need to be given calcium supplements to complete their training.

That being said, I think drafting women might actually be the least of the DoD’s concerns at this time.
