Gavin Newsom Admits ‘It’s True’ San Francisco Only Cleaned Up for APEC

San Francisco was cleaned up ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, which is set to take place later this week and will welcome President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, among other global and industry leaders.

Homeless encampments were moved, major roadways have been repaved, and sidewalks have been scrubbed and power washed, “especially where APEC attendees may walk through,” according to KTUV. Train cars have even been cleaned at a higher frequency ahead of the upcoming visit from more than “20,000 high-profile CEOs and Heads of State,” the local outlet reported.

The California Public Works Department has painted decorative crosswalks in North Beach and Chinatown, while new murals and landscaping were added to the areas officials expect APEC attendees to visit as well.

While many residents are thrilled to see San Francisco return to a “world-class city,” many are outraged that officials only took the initiative and tax funds to clean the city because wealthy executives and world leaders were scheduled to visit.

Responding to these complaints, California Governor Gavin Newsom said, “Folks say ‘Oh they’re just cleaning up this place cause all those fancy leaders are coming to town,’ uh — that’s true because it’s true.”

TPUSA CEO and Founder, Charlie Kirk, among others, slammed the progressive governor for his statement, asserting that he “would rather impress foreign tyrants with a lie than clean up the streets to protect American Citizens.”

The collapse of San Francisco was evidently preventable, but state and local authorities needed the right incentive to make positive, albeit temporary, changes.

At Turning Point USA, we believe it is our responsibility to address this pressing issue and promote safe, flourishing, and healthy communities across the U.S.
