Karin Derry, a former Iowa State Representative, has openly advocated against the possibility of high schoolers at Johnston High School from joining TPUSA’s conservative movement, lobbying for the Johnston Community School District to vote against Turning Point USA’s high school charter.
Below, Representative Derry highlights the TPUSA School Board Watchlist — and a TPUSA poster that affirms our students’ commitment to love America no matter what.
TPUSA’s School Board Watchlist only relays public information about what duly elected officials are passing in their public school districts. Nothing about the SBWL is covert, leaked, or gathered from insiders so it’s not clear what about the service Rep. Derry is protesting.
The poster that Rep. Derry takes particular offense to says, “No matter what my teacher says I’ll always love America.” This was too much for Rep. Derry. She says in her tweet, highlighting the poster:
Please contact Johnston School Board members and urge them to vote no on allowing this dangerous and hateful group in our schools!

Rep. Derry’s tirade against TPUSA continued, as she zeroed in on fellow TPUSA Field Representative, Jordyn. Check out Rep. Derry’s thorough research on Jordyn below:
What particularly stood out to me was Rep. Derry’s defense of communism. Am I reading something different, or does Rep. Derry take offense to TPUSA’s intention to abolish communism. Why should anyone, especially those who were formally representing a state of the United States of America, defend the communist form of government?
This isn’t the first time TPUSA causes a stir among concerned Leftists. Earlier on February 8, 2022, the Des Moines Register reported that a TPUSA chapter might be coming to Johnston High School.
Stephen Hopper, a former school board member, said in that initial reporting that the TPUSA students would “have to get a sponsor, they have to get some things — if they do that, agree or disagree with them politically, they followed the process and I hope we would respect that and not try to preempt it by making individual exemptions for various groups.” This means that so long as TPUSA follows the chartering rules, Rep. Derry’s bias against high schoolers is unjustified.
It’s disturbing that Former Iowa State Representative Karin Derry disagrees with giving students a chance to hear the conservative position on free speech, fiscal responsibility, and limited government.
Local sources tell TPUSA that the school board is scheduled to vote tonight, April 25, on whether or not TPUSA will be recognized as an official student club.
