In the great and competitive campaigns carried out by the Federalists and Anti-Federalists, essays were released in newspapers across the country to persuade American voters to vote or NOT to vote in favor of the proposed United States Constitution.

I host a podcast on the ratification debate called Freedom Papers, with a new episode every Monday!

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the FEDERALIST Papers: (Don’t worry, I’ll do one on the Anti-Federalist Papers too!)

  1. “Yes, my countrymen, I own to you that, after having given it an attentive consideration, I am clearly of opinion it is your interest to adopt it. I am convinced that this is the safest course for your liberty, your dignity, and your happiness.” – Publius, Federalist 1 (Written by Alexander Hamilton)
  2. “It has often given me pleasure to observe that independent America was not composed of detached and distant territories, but that one connected, fertile, wide-spreading country was the portion of our western sons of liberty.
  3. “With equal pleasure, I have as often taken notice that Providence has been pleased to give this one connected country to one united people–a people descended from the same ancestors, speaking the same language, professing the same religion, attached to the same principles of government, very similar in their manners and customs, and who, by their joint counsels, arms, and efforts, fighting side by side throughout a long and bloody war, have nobly established general liberty and independence.” – Publius, Federalist 2 (Written by John Jay)
  4. “This country and this people seem to have been made for each other, and it appears as if it was the design of Providence, that an inheritance so proper and convenient for a band of brethren, united to each other by the strongest ties, should never be split into a number of unsocial, jealous, and alien sovereignties.” – Publius, Federalist 2 (Written by John Jay)
  5. “Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm.” – Publius, Federalist 10 (Written by Madison)

Okay… can you tell I really like Federalist 2? It’s my favorite paper! I mean, come on… saying our country and our people were brought together by Providence?! Chills.

Be sure to subscribe to Freedom Papers and tune in every Monday!
