It’s another win for the courts in America! A federal judge in Texas has struck down President Biden’s plan for financial aid debt relief and student loan forgiveness. This huge, but unsurprising, announcement halts the White House’s efforts to forgive student loans for over 26 million Americans.

According to NBC News,

U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman, an appointee of former Republican President Donald Trump in Fort Worth, called the program an ‘unconstitutional exercise of Congress’s legislative power’ as he ruled in favor of two borrowers backed by a conservative advocacy group.

The legality of President Biden’s executive order was questioned from the beginning. This federal judge is arguing that the President does not have the power to sign into law a debt relief program that would forgive over $400 billion of debt for Americans. This is legislation that would need to be voted on and passed by Congress.

While from an individual standpoint, this news may be disappointing — after all, who wouldn’t want $10,000-$20,000 worth of debt forgiven, however, the economic ramifications of this program would have been catastrophic. To set up a system that would eliminate debt and future costs out of thin air would have led to higher taxes, higher inflation, and more government debt handed down to future generations. Not to mention the fact that this is unjust to the millions of Americans who did not go to college; why should their tax dollars be used to bail-out someone else for their personal life choices?

That being said, the Student Debt Crisis Center was not at all hesitant to express its disagreement with the ruling:

Blocking an illegal order that forgives debt is an “injustice?” Even in their strong opposition, the left fails to realize it is failed policies, open borders, rises in crimes, job decline, tax increases, and multiple infractions from the current administrations that are the real injustice to millions of Americans.
