Hundreds of illegal immigrants who crossed the southern border were arrested on March 21 for participating in a riot and assaulting border patrol agents, according to video footage. On March 31, a federal judge ordered the release of many of those illegal immigrants, according to a report from The Federalist.
A federal judge in Texas ruled that some of the illegal immigrants accused of storming the National Guard should be released with no-cost bail. Presiding Magistrate Judge Humberto Acosta decided that these people are free from prison for their multitude of crimes including illegally entering the country and engaging in a riot against border patrol agents.
Texas arrested upwards of 200 illegal immigrants who rioted at the El Paso, Texas, border checkpoint and reportedly assaulted National Guard troops. The state of Texas charged nine of those migrants involved in the riot, many of whom had knives and shanks on them, according to Collin Rugg’s reporting on X.
Migrants were facing charges such as inciting a riot and assault and damage of property over $2,500, Rugg reported.
The magistrate judge granted most of the illegal rioters personal recognizance, which means they signed papers vowing to reappear in court without posting bail. This applied to the illegal immigrants who faced local jail, not the border crossers who remained in federal detention facilities, according to the El Paso Times.
Acosta blamed the El Paso District Attorney for failing to prepare adequately for detention hearings promptly, allegedly leaving the judge with no other option.
“If the DA’s office is telling me that they are not ready to go, what we’re going to do is we’re going to release all these individuals on their own recognizance,” Acosta said. The announcement that illegal immigrants who rioted will be released comes at the same time four pro-life Christians are being prosecuted by the federal government for potential prison time for peacefully protesting at a Tennessee abortion facility.
