It’s almost impossible to walk the streets of San Francisco without having to step over a needle.
But this isn’t just San Francisco. Urban areas across the country are suffering from astonishing rates of drug dependency. And this has many consequences, including record mortality numbers. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2020 marked the year in which the greatest number of people died from drug-related overdoses. This shouldn’t have to be the norm for our country’s most prominent and well-known metropolitan areas.
What’s even more concerning than the drug prevalence itself is the inability of leftist leaders to confront it. For decades, cities such as San Francisco have remained under leftist leadership, yet these problems have only progressed, despite promises to fix them. Furthermore, at the start of the pandemic, leftist politicians in San Francisco even chose to enable addiction via distributing drugs to homeless people out of means of “public health.”
It’s apparent that cities with the highest drug use also have the highest levels of crime, violence, and issues within the family structure. The pandemic has only illuminated these issues and the immediate need for structural change.
This all makes me question what stake leftists have in the decay of their cities. But more important than that, why are many quick to vote in the same people when they expect a change?
Nevertheless, it’s time for new leadership. We can’t afford to let our cities continue to crumble. We deserve politicians who care about their citizens and fix the problems that they’ve created.
