DHS: No ‘Substantial Increase’ of Migrants Overnight, Internal Memo Suggests Otherwise

Yuma, Arizona — CBP lined up hundreds of illegal border crossers overnight to transport them to processing facilities.

Following the expiration of Title 42, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official Blas Nunez-Neto told reporters this morning that there was not a “substantial increase [of illegal immigrants] overnight,” however an internal memo obtained by Fox News suggests otherwise.

“We continue to encounter high levels of non-citizens at the border, but we did not see a substantial increase overnight or an influx at midnight.”

The memo, sent out today, told asylum officers working at the border that, “Developments emerging over the course of the day made clear that more resources are needed, and we must take immediate steps to increase the number of staff available on both Saturday and Sunday to meet the need.”

“In order to ensure full operational readiness, I must now ask that all Asylum Division employees, with limited exception, work both Saturday and Sunday this weekend,” the memo stated.

A DHS press release from May 11, just hours before Title 42 expired, explained that the administration plans to consider anyone who entered into the U.S. unlawfully ineligible for asylum.

“Starting tonight, people who arrive at the border without using a lawful pathway will be presumed ineligible for asylum. We are ready to humanely process and remove people without a legal basis to remain in the U.S. . . . we are prepared for this transition.”

The statement claims that those who enter illegally will be processed and removed; however, many are not immediately expelled from the U.S. and often disappear into the interior of the country, never appearing at their prescribed court date. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents in Yuma, Arizona told Frontlines Reporters that 90 percent of illegal immigrants given “notice to appear” documents fail to show up in court.

Last year, CBP estimated that nearly 5 million illegal immigrants had poured over the U.S. southern border during President Biden’s time in office. Now, with daily encounters reaching an all-time high of more than 10,000 a day, generous estimates place the number close to 6 million migrants who have entered the country in the last few years.

Just outside the U.S.-Mexico border, hundreds of migrants set up camp to wait out the last few hours of Title 42 before it was lifted. Frontlines Reporter Rebecca Brannon took video footage of the scene, noting the massive piles of litter and trash which would later be abandoned.

Americans have watched border towns turn into shelters overnight, and are worried about what will happen to their communities if the surge of undocumented people coming into the country does not slow.

“Where’s [liberal’s] empathy for the overrun schools, hospitals, and cities? Or for the [approximately] 100,000 families who will lose a loved one THIS YEAR to fentanyl that was smuggled across the border? Where’s your empathy for all women who get raped by the cartels smuggling them across the border? Or for the 85,000 unaccompanied children DHS has just lost track of somewhere in the interior?”
