Last weekend a mass shooting occurred in D.C. at the Moechella music event, killing one teenager and injuring three adults (including a police officer). The shooting, which occurred on Juneteenth, received minimal coverage by the media. Instead, news networks focused more on the debate of making Juneteenth a federal holiday. It’s sickening that we can endlessly debate things that happened in our country hundreds of years ago, but we can’t focus on the violence happening in our cities today.
Meanwhile in Uvalde, more details are starting to unfold about the school massacre that killed 19 children and two adults. The local Texas newspaper San Antonio Express News is reporting that according to an anonymous police source, the door to the classroom the shooter was inside was unlocked but law enforcement did not try to open the door while the shooing was being carried out. This begs two significant questions that must be answered: why was the door not locked like it was supposed to be, and why did the officers wait so long before going in to stop him?
In more positive news, the international swimming organization FINA has announced that it will prohibit biological men from competing in female swimming events. In a response to the transgender swimmer lea Thomas, FINA states that categories will be defined by biological standards to protect female athletes. Is this indicative of a right-wing cultural shift that is starting to happen across the world?
