Student organizations opposed to Immigration and Customs Enforcement held a chalking event on Wednesday at Colorado State University in the Lory Student Center Plaza, where participants covered existing religious drawings and messages with far-left political statements.

Earlier in the day, a large chalked cross was seen in the plaza with the phrase “The way, the truth, the light.” During the anti-ICE demonstration, students replaced it with the message “the way is peace, the truth is love, the life is trans.” Participants also drew a transgender depiction of Jesus on the cross and altered another message that originally read “abortion is murder,” changing it to “abortion is awesome.” According to students who were present, additional drawings and phrases were added throughout the plaza.

CSU TPUSA member Blake Jones responded to the altered drawings by chalking Bible verses nearby. While he was doing so, a student approached him and began verbally harassing him. After the two exchanged words, the student charged toward him in what appeared to be an attempt to assault him, but a bystander intervened and prevented the altercation. Later, the same student returned, spat on Jones, and walked away.

CSUPD has opened an investigation into the incident. Jones filed a police report immediately after the confrontation and requested campus security footage. Police said they would share the footage with Jones if permitted.

“As a turning point member, a conservative, and a catholic, I believe we should NEVER resort to violence, insults, or harassment,” Jones said. “For someone to spit on me, solely for writing down bible verses, in the same plaza where transgender Jesus and hateful messaging is being drawn by YDSA, is absolutely appalling and unacceptable.”

“I want to get my story out and spread awareness of this disgusting act so that I can help further prevent political or religious-based assault or harassment, and to try to show people that the best way to deal with your differences is to just have a civilized conversation,” Jones added.
