Multiple universities, both public and private, across the United States have now announced they will require the COVID-19 vaccine for students to return to campus in the fall.

The University of Notre Dame, Rutgers University, Colorado State University, University of Denver, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Southern California, Yale University, Loyola University Chicago, Johns Hopkins University, New York University and dozens more have announced the vaccine will be required for students and faculty members, with limited exemptions.

TPUSA student activists at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and California State University-Sacramento shared their perspectives with us as students face vaccine requirements.

Gwen Roberts, Turning Point USA chapter President at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, says the decision for the University to demand vaccination or weekly COVID tests from students remains an outstanding legal question and would continue to degrade mental health for students. She says, “Mental health is at the lowest point that it’s ever been, and students cannot wait to get back to in-person classes and normalcy to help regain their mental health and overall happiness in life by not feeling so lonely and isolated anymore. However, a good portion of the students attending the University who disagree with getting the vaccine or having the government require documentation and paperwork will have no choice but to go against their ideals and comply with the institution or stay home until who knows when and continue to dive into a deeper depression.”

Amber Kleinke, President of Turning Point USA at Sacramento State, says, “the CSU’s have taken away a full year of in-person instruction, stripped Sacramento State Seniors of an in-person graduation and are now are looking to mandate a vaccine requirement for those students who are looking to return to campus in the fall at limited capacity. Drop out rates and learning loss will continue to increase.”
