The world around us today tries to distract, each new food, drug, and application, is meant to addict users. Technology consumes our lives, the 24 hour news cycle keeps us in a constant state of worry, the World Economic Forum wants us to “own nothing and be happy,” and American politicians want young people to forgo having a family and instead pursue a corporate career — while our birthrate plummets and illegal immigration skyrockets. The policies and culture in place tell young Americans that tradition is a thing of the past, that building a family and becoming a homemaker is old news.
I disagree.
Tradition, spending time with family and building bonds with the people who are in your life mean more than any material item or job promotion ever could. Authoritarian regimes and communist dictatorships have always targeted and divided the nuclear family, why? Because it is the fundamental building block of society. Without it, a country is weak, its people are not set up for success.
We have been so blessed in this country with opportunity, so much so, that it sometimes distracts us from what matters most: building a strong family and community. I believe many conservatives have finally woken up to realize that what is worth conserving is our values, our faith, our families — all of which are under constant attack. We win the culture war by working relentlessly to preserve what is most meaningful.
That being said, I hope that you all and your families are celebrating Christmas this year with any number of traditions, old and new.
Merry Christmas!
