It’s almost a cliche that conservatives hate EVERYTHING coming out of Hollywood, but if you’re skipping CODA or don’t know what it is, you’re really missing out!
CODA, which just won the Academy Award for Best Picture, stands for Child Of Deaf Adults and centers on Ruby, the only hearing person from a deaf family, and her discovery of her love for music which puts her at a crossroads with her family that is dependent on her as their link to the hearing world.
This movie is, at its heart, a very simple, straightforward story about family, first love, and growing up. It is very much a teen movie but deals with some very conservative-friendly issues. First of all, this is a working-class family of fishermen. They’re not rich, and they struggle with money, investing in their own business and using the family unit to run their business successfully.
As I watched CODA, I was pleasantly surprised at how refreshingly old-school its values were. Hard work. Togetherness. Family. It’s all there, and I think a lot of conservatives on social media are (as usual) missing the mark by dismissing this movie as a product of the “elitist and out of touch” Hollywood.
I’d highly, HIGHLY recommend this very simple yet very special story about a family coming together, loving one another, and a young person wrestling with whether or not to start their own journey!
