Governor Andrew Cuomo has officially resigned as a result of multiple allegations of sexual harassment. Now, what’s ironic about all of this is the way the media (specifically CNN) is handling this news. Andrew Cuomo has a brother named Chris Cuomo who has his own show, Primetime, every night on CNN but miraculously, he was silent on this issue until yesterday.
Here’s the issue, when Andrew was governor, Chris and CNN made sure to highlight the governor in a good light, even going as far as promoting his book on live TV. Might I add, he made $5 million dollars from this book deal. Does anyone else see this conflict of interest here? This is journalistic malpractice, and another reason why more and more people are failing to trust the media. How can we trust the media to report on the news, when the people reporting the news are related to the people they’re supposed to be reporting on?
CNN’s chief media correspondent Brian Stelter has been clear that Chris not talking about his brother on Primetime is by design. They barred him from talking about his brother on TV and that he can’t participate in strategy sessions with his aides. Some people say it’s a smart play on CNN’s part since other anchors are talking about the issue, and some are saying it’s a cop-out, and he should be addressing this the same way he addresses everything else.
What we can learn from this disaster that CNN is dealing with is that there is a need for unbiased news. There’s a need for proper journalists doing the work – reporting on the issues and scandals at hand, more than reporting on the work that they’re paid to report on. It’s no shocker that Fox leans right and CNN leans left, but at some point we need to establish the raw news somewhere otherwise we have no idea where this will go.
