Chinese President Xi Jinping is attempting to roll back the nation’s evolution toward a capitalistic free market and return China to Mao’s socialist state.

Economic reforms announced 40 years ago under Deng Xiaoping have positively impacted millions of people–lifting the impoverished out of poverty, creating jobs for countless Chinese citizens, and creating trillions of dollars in wealth. Throughout the process, it diminished the importance of the Communist Party, and individualism and competition became encouraged.

According to his advisors, Xi now believes the evolution into the free market has diminished the party’s role and legitimacy in China, and he plans to have significantly higher government involvement and control of entrepreneurs and the market. Xi dreams of building China into a “modern socialist power.”

As China’s government intensifies its role in the lives of individual citizens, from operating Uyghur concentration camps to limiting content consumed through television and online, it’s hardly surprising that the government is focused on controlling society even further.
