Catholic College Denies TPUSA Chapter For Coverage On Transgender Issues

Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, denied a student application to form a TPUSA chapter on campus. Saint Mary’s, a Catholic university, stated that the chapter’s denial is due to TPUSA’s rhetoric on LGBTQ+ issues and our firm belief that there are only two genders.
Saint Mary’s Dean of Students, Gloria Jenkins and Vice President of Enrollment, Lori Johnson told the TPUSA Chapter President on campus that the, “style and content of Turning Point USA’s messaging around LGBTQ+ issues do not align with the mission and values of Saint Mary’s.”
“As leaders we are charged with educating and caring for students, as well as safeguarding the mission and vision of the College. In this role, we are obligated to take into account how any national organization could impact our community. After carefully looking at the entirety of TPUSA and discerning if their strategies and tactics could have a negative impact on the College, we decided we could not formally underwrite any programming that uses their name.”
Email to the chapter president from Jenkins and Johnson
Jenkins and Johnson specifically cited TPUSA Live Feed articles, which frequently cover transgender issues, especially pertaining to gender-affirming care, as the messaging that “doesn’t align” with the values of the so-called Catholic university. They also referenced TPUSA’s merch shop, which sells clothing with “divisive” slogans like, “Real Men Aren’t Women” and “Coexist.”

“It completely astounds me to see that a ‘Catholic’ institution like Saint Mary’s College has rejected my request to start a conservative chapter on campus due to ‘biological differences’ regarding transgenderism.”
Claire Bettag TPUSA chapter President
The school’s representatives stated that TPUSA “states their campus chapters and activism hubs are designed to stoke ‘culture wars.'” TPUSA’s mission is not to incite controversy or conflict on college campuses. Rather, its intention is to give conservative students, who are often the minority on college campuses, a voice and a sense of belonging among peers who share similar values. High school and college chapters exist to create healthy and productive dialogue among students — something sorely lacking from modern academia.
Students attending the college have also reported that the school approved a club supporting LGBTQ+ activities on campus, in direct conflict with Catholic doctrine.
It is disappointing but not surprising that in 2023 a Catholic institution has chosen to side with the progressive stance on sexuality, morality, and gender. A Catholic college has chosen to simply skip parts of the Bible which explicitly define man and woman, husband and wife, because those are societally inconvenient. So many Catholics and Christians have fallen for the lie that society’s version of love is somehow better than God’s version of love, and this simply is not true.

“This is why so many are beginning to speak out against early medical transitions, aside from the irreversible physical effects, permanent sterilization, and age of consent laws, some people are truly misdiagnosed because doctors allow them to self-diagnose.”

“Thousands of people, adults and children, who are either too young to know better or are suffering from a mental illness which impairs their ability to meaningfully consent, are being handed gender affirming treatments on a silver platter. The medical industry’s urge to immediately medicate and mutilate these patients before completing due diligence and testing is a deadly lapse in judgement which needs to be stopped before more suffering is inflicted.”
