Barstool’s Dave Portnoy Reinstated On Twitter
After banning founder of Barstool Sports and famous pizza reviewer Dave Portnoy, Twitter reinstated “el Presidente” following serious backlash from its user base.
Portnoy’s account had amassed 2.5 million followers and was suddenly shut down without notice, accompanied by a simple ‘Account suspended’ message.
Immediately following the ban, Portnoy shared with his community, “The will of the people will be heard. #freeportnoy.”
Massive backlash ensued against Twitter on its platform as people called for Portnoy’s account to be reinstated, and users were left speculating why such a ban happened in the first place.
Twitter reinstated the account on June 18 with no explanation as to why it was banned to begin with and declined to comment about the ban or reversal.
When platforms can ban an entire account with several million followers in a single moment with no explanation, it’s clear that free speech is under attack in America. Our right to express ourselves may look different than it did in the 1700s outdoors in a public square, but our voices matter no less just because they are shared through a screen. Censorship of any voice on social media simply for the cause of silencing their point of view is not sustainable and will only continue to drive the American people apart. It’s time for a change.
