I just got back from my latest hunting trip just south of the border in Sonora, Mexico! I wrote about my experience in my last article, but I wanted to share some of the craziest sightings I saw while over there. I don’t know if crazy is the right word to describe all below but nonetheless, all were interesting things to witness firsthand!

  1. Illegal Immigrants being dropped off back into Mexico

I mentioned this in the previous article as well but while we were driving into Mexico through the Sasabe Border Crossing we saw the truck bed of a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol vehicle loaded down with 7 illegal immigrants being dropped back off across the border. Also on the way back into the U.S. while we were in Arizona we saw a group of 2-3 people running across the road and hiding in the bushes… I will let you draw your own conclusion there. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to snap a picture of either of these instances.

2. Mexico Gas Station

One day as we were on our way back from a different ranch we were hunting we drove through town and pulled up to a house that had a handwritten poster tied to the fence that said “Gasolina.” Apparently, anyone in the town can just sell gas and it’s completely normal to get gas this way.

3. Kids cruising around town on a Sunday afternoon

While we were driving to the “gas station” Rudy (the guide) talked to some local kids who were driving the towns streets on their four wheeler. Rudy was asking the kids for directions and they showed us around! It was cool to see young kids running around the streets on a four wheeler on a Sunday afternoon…. it reminded me of small towns in Texas.

4. Camp animals all living in unison

I have been many places and been around many animals but I have never seen so many different animals all live in unison. The lodge we were staying out had a crazy variety of farm animals just hanging around camp — dogs, cats, mules, chickens, guineas, peacocks, turkeys, cows… and I’m sure I’m missing some. They all got along for the most part except for about 2 AM when every species wanted to make the loudest noise it could possibly make.

5. Cartel Vehicles/Spotters

And last but not least….. the cartel. Driving from ranch to ranch we would pass through towns and pass checkpoints. I would ask about the checkpoints… “it’s the federales checking for the cartel.” At one point we saw a car stop on the side of the road and a guy got out and run up the hill…. “He’s a spotter for the cartel going to his lookout point.” We would pass cars that were all blacked out and you couldn’t see into them at all…. “that’s the cartel.” I wasn’t able to snap a pic of either of these instances either.
