Elon Musk Scaling Back DOGE Involvement to Prioritize Tesla

After less than three months in his role with the Trump administration, Elon Musk will be scaling back his time with the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to focus on his private companies, as Tesla stock and sales go through a considerable decrease.
Musk made the following comments on his DOGE tenure during Tesla’s Q1 Investor Relations call with Wall Street on Tuesday.
“Starting next month, May, my time allocation to DOGE will drop significantly,” Musk said. He indicated he has no intention to altogether cease his work with the White House.
“I’ll have to continue doing it for the remainder of the president’s term, just to make sure that the waste and fraud we stopped does not come roaring back, which it will do if it has the chance.”
Musk outlined his approach for the upcoming period, the length of which he did not specify:
“So I think I’ll continue to spend a day or two per week on government matters for as long as the president would like me to do so, and as long as it is useful. But starting next month I’ll be allocating far more of my time to Tesla, now that the major work of establishing the Department of Government Efficiency is done.”
President Trump made the following comments on Musk, according to Fox News:
”He’s an incredible… brilliant guy,” Trump said. “He was a tremendous help both in the campaign, and in what he’s done with DOGE….He’s a great patriot… he makes a great product… it’s a great car. It’s [a] great everything. Starlink is great. What he does is good. He’s doing medical things that are amazing.”
The president also welcomed the Tesla CEO back to more involvement with the administration whenever Musk is set to return. “I’d like to keep him for a long time,” Trump commented.
During its first quarter, Tesla’s revenue decreased by 9 percent, with the company earning $409 million. According to Tesla, the company delivered 495,570 vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2024. However, in the first quarter of 2025, Tesla’s deliveries dropped to 336,881.
