California Theater Faces Backlash for Canceling Matt Walsh’s Film ‘Am I Racist?’ over ‘Safety’ Concerns

A California movie theater is facing backlash after canceling showings of Daily Wire host Matt Walsh’s latest film ‘Am I Racist?’ citing “safety” concerns.
The Del Oro Theatre in Grass Valley released a statement explaining the decision, noting that the strong reactions from the community prompted the cancellation.
“Due to the strong reactions from our community (for and against the film), and concerns for the well-being of our staff, we will not be playing the film ‘Am I Racist?’ as originally intended,” the theater claimed in a statement on X.
“Please know that it was not our intention to cause such division by playing this film,” it added. “We noticed that many of the theaters in the Sacramento area were booked to play this film and quite frankly the reaction caught us off guard. The safety of our staff is our number one priority.”
The theater’s decision has sparked criticism online. Anti-DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) activist Robby Starbuck posted a screenshot of the theater’s statement on X accusing left-wing activists of pressuring small theaters to drop the film.
“Wow. Left wing activists are now bullying small movie theaters like Del Oro Theatre in Grass Valley, CA into dropping Matt Walsh’s new ‘Am I Racist?’ film. Another theatre owner told me that they’ve been told small theaters like this are being targeted with threats from left wing activists,” Starbuck posted.
“The left is terrified of this film because it’s not only hilarious but it’s effective at dismantling their dangerous ideology,” he added. “We need to pack the theaters with sold out showings to make this movie even bigger.”
Walsh responded to the controversy, encouraging people to attend screenings of the film. “The only way to stop the Left from shutting down the film is to support the theaters that are showing it,” he said.
‘Am I Racist?’ is Walsh’s follow-up to his 2022 documentary ‘What Is a Woman?’, which gained significant attention for its exposure of transgender ideology. In his latest film, Walsh goes undercover to challenge diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, including speaking with White Fragility author Robin DiAngelo.
