Bill Gates Proposes Wealthy Countries Move to 100% Synthetic Meat
Fake beef for the rich. Real beef for the poor.
According to Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, the world’s wealthiest countries should move away from real beef to a plant-based alternative to fight global climate change.
“I do think all rich countries should move to 100% synthetic beef. You can get used to the taste difference, and the claim is they’re going to make it taste even better over time. Eventually, that green premium is modest enough that you can sort of change the [behavior of] people or use regulation to totally shift the demand,” Gates told the MIT Tech Review.
In Gates’ new book “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster,” he talks about the need to eliminate greenhouse-gas emissions. He also debates how policy changes and tech innovations can help curb industries with large carbon footprints, which all lead back to livestock production.
In a report from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, all agriculture contributes 9% of the total U.S greenhouse gas emissions in 2016 with animal agriculture contributing only 3.9 % of the total in the U.S.
For those that think giving up all animal protein from their diets would reduce GHG, take this into consideration…. If the entire U.S. gave up meat, it would only eliminate GHG by 2.6% – not to mention meat is a proven, solid source of protein for the human diet.
All in all, I disagree with Bill Gates’ theory. There are far more efficient ways to reduce GHG than cut out beef from a specific portion of the population.
As for me, I guess I’ll stick with poor people REAL meat.
