Actor Rainn Wilson Calls For A More Positive Representation Of Christians In Media

Most Americans have taken note of the obvious shift in how Hollywood portrays Christian characters in movies and television series over the last few decades. Many productions depict Christianity as a religion of hate or liken it to cult-like behavior.
Last week Rainn Wilson, who grew to popularity by playing Dwight Schrute in The Office, commented about this Hollywood trend on his Twitter account. Wilson referenced the popular show The Last of Us on HBO Max, a series based on the hit video game.
The character David is the typical cult leader character that Hollywood likes to portray. Presumably loosely based on famous cultist David Koresh, the character is first portrayed as a humble Christian man but is soon revealed to be using Christianity as a means to manipulate and control his followers.
After his tweet gained massive attention, Wilson clarified that he himself is not a Christian. He also claimed that Christian politicians are causing a “great deal of damage to our country,” and stated evidence that is clearly misleading. But he did double down on his original claim, stating that most Christians are kind and loving people who deserved to be honored in media.
It is shocking to hear a well-known Hollywood actor who isn’t even Christian come to the defense of religious Americans who want to see more Christian representation in movies and television shows. Hollywood has purposefully found ways to glorify satanic behavior in recent days, whether it be Sam Smith’s Grammys performance or the recent Balenciaga ad campaign. Hopefully, Wilson’s observation that Christians are no longer represented in a positive light is indicative of a change in Hollywood. A large percentage of the people who consume Hollywood’s content want to see characters who have values that align with their own, and maybe change is finally on the way.
