California HS Track Athlete Disqualified for Victory Celebration

A track athlete in California was disqualified from her win in the 400-meter final for performing a celebration in which she sprayed a fire extinguisher on her cleats. Clara Adams, a sophomore at North Salinas High School, was emulating the celebration of Olympic gold medalist Maurice Green, who made the same celebration during the 100-meter dash at the Home Depot Invitational in 2004.

Once Adams was finished celebrating, a few California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) officials walked her away from the track and immediately disqualified her win, claiming the celebration was unsportsmanlike. The CIF has yet to issue a statement on Adams’ disqualification and its rationale for doing so.

Adams’ father, who aided his daughter in the celebration by providing a fire extinguisher to her (see main image), commented on the incident, claiming his daughter was supported by the crowd as she celebrated:

“When she blew the fire extinguisher, the opponents were gone,” he said. “That was our moment of celebration, and CIF officials made it about them. The crowd went crazy, they loved it, the CIF booth went crazy, they loved it. But those few [CIF] guys in those jackets took offense to it, didn’t like it, and made a decision based off emotions.”

A disappointed Adams said she felt robbed by the CIF.

“I am in shock. They [CIF officials] yelled at me and told me, ‘We’re not letting you on the podium.’ They took my moment away from me.”

The CIF could have deemed the celebration to violate one of the following points in its code of conduct concerning “Class,” and “Taunting”:

However, Adams performed the celebration by herself, and away from her competitors which would not, at least, suggest a violation of the taunting clause in the code.

In other CIF news, trans-identifying athlete AB Hernandez from Jurupa Valley High School won both the high and triple jumps in a CIF girls’ championship meet. These wins come after Hernandez beat other opponents in preliminary postseason meets.

President Donald Trump, who has expressed opposition to Hernandez’s competition in an earlier postseason meet, commented on the athlete’s recent wins on Truth Social. Trump threatened federal consequences if biological males continue to compete without consequence in California’s women’s sports.

“Turning Point USA’s commitment to the fight for freedom on campus is more important now than ever.”
