Big Government Silences. That was one week of our activism this semester, but it was a huge focus of our efforts this past month. We not only tabled in support of ending free speech zones, but we also made sure our activists were trained to know their rights.
Our College of DuPage chapter hosted attorneys to educate us on our rights on campus; the same campus where our chapter leader, Joe Enders, was instrumental in overturning a restrictive free-speech policy. The college went from requiring every flyer or poster to be approved by a campus bureaucrat to allowing us to table anywhere inside or in a public area on campus. They also agreed to leave out more tables for anyone to use for tabling, thereby making it easier for students to find members for a new group they want to start.
At Northern Illinois, we tabled and chalked in support of free-speech. Northern Illinois has a restrictive policy which limits speech to one small part of campus. We also invited any student to chalk anything they wanted on the sidewalk as part of our efforts, whether or not it was a position we agree with.
Turning Point USA will continue to fight unconstitutional and restrictive free-speech policies on campus for the benefit of ALL students, no matter what their viewpoint is.
